Have you ever wondered what equipment is used for water leak detection? Let us explain…

Thermal Imaging Leak Detection:

Thermal Imaging Leak Detection is the process of detecting hidden water leaks and moisture patterns using a infrared thermal imaging camera.

Benefits of thermal imaging leak detection include the ability to identify leaks hidden behind or under building materials including concrete.

We use Thermal Imaging Cameras in our processes to find leaks on heating systems, roofing, swimming pools, water mains, underfloor heating systems, plumbing pipes and structural leaks.

Thermal cameras are accurate and reliable when finding leaks but can not be used in isolation.

Call FC Leak Detection for specialist Thermal imaging leak tracing services.

Acoustic Leak Detection:

What is Acoustic Leak Detection?

Acoustic leak detection is the process of tracing a water leak using a highly sensitive ground microphone to listen for the sound of escaping water from pipes.

We use highly sensitive ground and pipe microphones / acoustic sensors to magnify the noise of any leak.

This hi-tech method delivers a reliable, data driven and precise solution, without causing any damage or destruction to your property.

Acoustic leak detection is just part our our overall leak detection process here at FCLD – the market leaders in professional non-invasive leak detection services on water mains, swimming pools & plumbing.

Our leak specialist have knowledge and experience in all forms of leak detection technologies – giving us a 99% success rate in finding hidden water leaks!

Tracer Gas Detection:

Tracer Gas Leak Detection is the process of using inert tracer gases (Hydrogen / Nitrogen) to detect water leaks. Tracer gas is also known as leak detection Gas.

Tracer gases can be used to detect many types of leaks including central heating leaks and roof leaks.

The benefits of using tracer gases to in the process of finding a leak includes the ability to pinpoint the location of a leak under the floor, concrete or inside a wall without causing any damage to the surface.

The procedure to identify the location of a water leak using leak detection gas requires the engineer to fill the pipework or void with tracer gases.  Tracer gases are detected using a gas sniffer when rising to the surface from the location of the leak.

Leak Pressure Testing:

Pressure testing is a reliable method of testing all types of pipework, including central heating, underfloor heating, mains, hot and cold, to ascertain if there is a leak. The pipe work is normally pressurised up to 1.5 times its approximate working pressure, but this is dependant on the type of pipe and its condition, and the pressure then monitored. A drop or loss in pressure indicates a leak is present. If the pressure holds it indicates no leak is present.

If the pressure testing confirms there is a leak on a specific pipe then the specialist equipment (Gas Tracing, Acoustic Microphone, Thermal Imaging) is then used to locate the leak.

Pressure testing is also used after the leak is located and repaired to ensure the repair is sound and to check for multiple leaks.

UV / Dye Testing Leak Detection:

We use our own Specialist leak detection dye to determine leakage and escapes of water from fixed pipework, bathrooms, ceilings, flat roofs, toilets, drains, swimming pools etc. It can also help to identify leaks in voids and cavities. It is a non toxic highly concentrated water soluble dye.

With our specialist leak detection dye it can help us identify water leaks in bathrooms. Shower leaks can be caused by cracked or broken tiles, tile grout, old silicone and with age the waterproofing membrane degrades creating holes, tears and breaks. Our Leak Detection specialist can determine this cause of leak and pinpoint the area. A leak behind the tiles is most commonly caused by a water pipe leaking. Our Leak Detection specialists do not need to remove the tiled wall to locate the leak. Using their Leak Detection equipment they can non-destructively pinpoint the leak.

Dampness/Moisture Meter Leak Detection:

Moisture meters are also known as damp meters and are used to detect leaks and water damage in buildings.

Damp or Moisture meters are used to measure moisture content of walls, floors and ceilings. Damp meter readings play a critical role in tracing internal water leaks and structural building leaks.

Our leak detection specialist use both the Pinless moisture meters and Pin-Type to measure levels of damp in various building materials.

Underground Pipe Locator:

Before you break ground on your next project, do you know what’s lurking beneath the surface? Failing to identify and map underground utilities can lead to costly repairs, dangerous accidents, and major project delays.

With water, gas, sewer lines, and even electrical cables hidden underground, a single wrong move could result in significant disruptions. With our utility locating services in New Jersey, First Class Leak Detection can provide you with accurate and detailed information about the location of all underground utilities, helping you avoid any potential risks or complications during your next project.

Sewer Camera Locator:

Sewer drains have a critical role to play in draining water and waste away from your home. But if you’re facing drain problems, you want it to be fixed as soon as possible. Fixing sewer drain problems right away can lower the risk of expensive repairs. How would you know the exact reason for your sewer lines acting up? A sewer video inspection is a good place to start.

Using specially designed cameras, our professionally trained technicians can visually inspect your sewer lines and other underground pipes to identify the root cause of the problem.

Smoke Test Leak Detection:

One of the most effective methods we use for leak detection is smoke testing. Smoke testing is the process of injecting artificially produced smoke into pipelines to see where the smoke comes out. If the pipe is in good health, the smoke will come out through manhole lids. If there are breaks or leaks in the pipe, we will be able to detect them because the smoke will emerge in places it shouldn’t.

Smoke testing is a relatively harmless method to locate leaks, without having to break ground. Our leak detection specialists have years of experience handling this system and use it to help commercial property owners and municipal building managers find and fix their leaks.

Borescope Camera Leak Detection:

Using a small camera and a flexible support, the process of endoscopic detection allows us to access hollow walls and recesses to look for the source of your leak. The camera’s light illuminates the cavities of your home to help the camera relay a real-time picture feed back to a screen viewed by a member of our team.

Endoscopic cameras provide a convenient and highly effective method through which to closely examine pipework and defects, before full access and repair.

The small size of the endoscope camera means we don’t need a large space to access a void and find your leak. Access can usually be obtained via an existing hole, crack or light fitting.

Correlation Leak Detection:

Correlation Leak Detection is a technique to find leaks in pressurised water pipes with pinpoint accuracy. A leaking pipe creates a sound which travels along the pipe wall material.

A Leak Noise Correlator works by attaching two sensors on the pipe.

The sensors emit and record a sound via radio to a separate processing unit. The correlator then calculates the location of the leak using a mathematical algorythm.

The calculation is composed of:

  • Signal Delay
  • Sensor Distance
  • Sound Velocity
The calculation tells the operative how far along the pipe the leak is from each sensor

Noise Loggers Leak Detection:

Network Monitoring Noise Loggers are used for early detection of leaks in water supply networks. The longer it takes to identify that a network is leaking the more revenue is lost and the greater the loss of precious water resources.

In addition to the more conventional methods of leak detection the installation of permanent noise loggers has proved to be a cost effective tool in early identification of water loss. By permanently monitoring sections of the system, which have previously been proven leak free, it will alert you when a potential leak does develop. Using a network of Noise Loggers, digital Correlating Loggers (DCLs), Leak Detection Specialists Ltd can pinpoint the exact locations of any leaks in one overnight surveillance. Our leak specialist will plan the placement of the DCLs and analyze and review the overnight results.

Noise loggers are considerably more sensitive than the human ear and are usually active during the night, when background noise is at a minimum. Noise amplitude will vary due to random effects, but there will always be a consistent minimum due to any noise that is always present i.e. leakage. Noise generated by a leak tends to have reasonably consistent amplitude. The small devices are deployed at points around the water network, where we will monitor the noise levels on the pipes themselves. Changes and distinctive patterns in sound indicate the presence of leaks, often including ones that would otherwise go completely undetected. Data is collected from all DCLs pinpointing the map locations of any leak sounds present. Our leak specialist will identify the recorded noise at different locations to determine the location of the leak.

Leak noise loggers help to reduce leakage levels and operating costs simultaneously by monitoring large areas of the water network quickly and effectively.  The results will enable water suppliers to reduce leakage cost effectively and to maintain these low levels at minimal cost.

Leak specialist have successfully used Noise Loggers at Holiday Parks, Aviation sites, Parks, Schools, Prisons and other commercial and industrial premises.
